Resolution Vs. Resilience

With as much enthusiasm and optimism that we can muster, we raise a glass and yell “Happy New Year!”

…Or some of us call it at 11 p.m. and wake to the next year well slept, not hungover and ready to conquer. (Confession – I was not one of the later, as evident below. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Regardless of the way you rang in 2019, you most likely set some resolutions – and probably announced it to your social network.

What were yours? What did you promise to yourself and the world?

You see, I ask because so many of us come into the new year with vengeance – ready to start that new “diet”and step up your workouts. So many of us choose resolutions that are purely physical. By nature, we lose steam in just a few months or even just a few weeks.

I’m going to quote Pastor Steven Furtick of Elevation Church, who said “Resolutions are cheap, Resilience is priceless”

Physical resolutions lack meaning, especially if you don’t know why you set them in the first place. We almost always focus so much on our physical wellbeing, and forget to take care of our hearts and minds.

If our hearts and minds are weak, we lack the resilience to continue progress. Bottom line, resolutions are temporary, yet resilience will see you through.

When the clock hit Midnight on Jan. 1, did you celebrate the resilience that you had in 2018? Did you celebrate the highs and appreciate the lows. All of those ups, downs and sideways experiences made you the you that stood in front of the mirror promising a new you this new year.

It’s a cyclical merry-go-round – and some never get off. More often than not, the types of resolutions we set, set us up for failure before we even begin. Therefore, we end up throwing in the towel after just months or even weeks into the New Year.

Rather than setting unrealistic goals, set goals that will give you purpose. Set small new habits that will slowly restore your mind, heart and soul – then as a result your body will respond and reward you.

Pick a word that will be your mission for the year- maybe it’s resilience or peace, maybe it’s adaptation or contentment, or maybe it’s or adventure. Whatever you choose, pick a word and pursue actions that allow you to grow in that area.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t set physical goals, just don’t forget about your heart and mind. Allow yourself the opportunity to achieve full health and wellness – and give yourself a lot of grace a long the way.

Whatever comes your way this year, you are more than capable and beyond worthy to live the best life – the life God has planned for you.

New year, same you, plus a lot of grace, love and growth!

Cheers and Happy New Year!
